Night High School celebrates spring graduation

On May 24, Lewisville ISD honored 36 Night High School (NHS) graduates during a celebratory ceremony held at the Purnell Support Center.
NHS is designed to allow academic options and ensure that all students receive their high school diploma.
Family and friends of the graduates filled the auditorium for the graduation, which included words of praise and encouragement from Dr. Stephen F. Waddell, LISD superintendent; Dr. Penny Reddell, associate superintendent for learning and teaching; Bronson Lewis NHS associate principal; Chantell Upshaw Lewisville Learning Center (LLC) principal and Rayetta Johnson LLC assistant principal.
“I dropped out of high school in 2006, because I just didn’t care,” Blackwell said. “Then I became a mom, and my priorities changed. My aunt told me about night high school and next thing I knew I found myself meeting with Mr. Lewis. He told me that choices reflect consequences and consequences reflect choices.”
In August 2011, Blackwell chose to enroll in NHS. She now has her high school diploma and plans to one day become a radiologist.
“I learned more at night school than I did in four years at high school,” Blackwell said. “The teachers make it so easy and they really care about us (the students). I thank God for night school – it’s life changing.”
The keynote speaker was Seth L. Bailey, Cedar Crest advisory council chair mentor emeritus, DIOP Friendship West Baptist Church. The national anthem was sung by professional soloist La Kendra “LaLa” Johnson and NHS staff members gave special acknowledgements to students.
Graduates included: Ashley Allen, Juan Alonso, Olga Apodoca, Jared Baker, Ester Barajas, Dylan Bayola, Stephanie Blackwell, Clara Camacho, Eder Carerra, Lizet Delfierro, Jason Donaho, Jasmine Escamilla, Brandon Gateskill, Maribel Gomez, Kevin Grant, Diana Hernandez, Edward Hernandez, Jennifer Hernandez, Stormi Hightower, Monica Lowery, Alexander Martin, Christopher McMinn, Carlos Moya, Jesus Pacheco, Cristian Rodriguez, Gabriela Rodriguez, Ulises Rodriguez, Carolina Rosales, Nataly Rubalcava, Jessica Spencer, Jorge Torres, Candice Williams, Katlin Wright, William Yuhasz, Mitchell Zackary and David Zarate II.
