LHS graduate earns perfect attendance, $500 scholarship
Lena Price, staff writer
Recent Lewisville High School graduate Brittany Nauenburg spent her senior year juggling varsity soccer, advanced science classes and a spot on the student council.
And she did it all without missing a single day of school.
She said her parents pushed her to put her studies ahead of everything else.
"My dad's always been the kind of guy that's always saying 'Go to school, think about your future," Nauenburg said. "So it's been a priority for me."
Kim Nauenburg, Brittany's mother, said she always wanted school to be number one for her daughter.
"But it was never a battle to get her to show up for school," Kim Nauenburg said. "She knew how important it was. And she was also blessed with a good immune system."
Because she was involved in multiple extracurricular activities, Nauenburg said she often found herself up late at night studying. She remembered many nights during her senior year when she wanted to sleep in and skip school but decided against it.
"I just didn't give myself the opportunity to not have time for something," Nauenburg said. "I got pretty good at time management."
In the fall, Nauenburg plans to move to Lubbock to attend Texas Tech University. She wants to major in nursing and minor in special education.
"They're always going to need people working in the medical field," Nauenburg said. "And I really want to follow in the footsteps of my grandmother, who was a nurse for a long time."
The district awarded Nauenburg a $500 scholarship for her perfect attendance record. She plans to use the money to cover the cost of books and part of tuition during her first year at Tech.
Her parents, who Nauenburg called her "biggest fans," are proud of her achievement and what it means for her future.
"They didn't get a chance to go to college, so they are really excited that I'll get to," Nauenburg said. "But they're also kind of sad. I'm the first one leaving the house."
Kim Nauenburg said it was difficult for her to come to terms with her daughter moving so far away from home.
"But it's always been her dream to go to Tech, and we're supporting her 100 percent," Kim Nauenburg said.
Brittany Nauenburg said transitioning to college will be a major adjustment for her and her family, but her education is going to stay important to her.
"I know it's going to be a really big culture change," Nauenburg said. "But the plan right now is for me to make it to all of my classes in college."
