Sheriff's deputy wins top crime prevention award
From staff reports
Crime prevention deputy Leslie Willingham of the Denton County sheriff's office was named the state's outstanding crime prevention specialist of medium-sized agencies at the Texas Crime Prevention Association's conference held in Richardson last week.
The award was given largely based on her creation of the Student Training and Youth Substance Abuse Fighter Education (STAY SAFE), a program aimed at grades five through 12 to educate students about drug and alcohol abuse, online sexual predators, bullying, dating violence and other dangerous youthful behaviors. Currently the sheriff's office presents the seven-week program in eight Denton County school systems four times a year.
"Receiving this award was very much a surprise," Willingham said. "One great result has been that five agencies who attended the conference have contacted the sheriff's office to ask how they can implement the program in their area."
Willingham is also a certified forensic artist who works with law enforcement agencies throughout the D-FW Metroplex, and her sketches have been instrumental in solving crimes after being published in the print and TV media. She is a member of the International Association for Identification and serves as a committee member in the organization.
The TCPA convention was held July 8-13.
