Firefighters stay busy during storms
By Chris Roark, croark@starlocalnews.com
Flower Mound Fire Chief Eric Metzger described Wednesday night’s lightning storm that moved through the area as tremendous.
But he described the storm’s impact on area firefighters as taxing.
Firefighters from Flower Mound and other communities spent the night battling several fires that were a result of the lightning storm, which swept across North Texas late Wednesday.
“The homeowner said it sounded like an explosion,” Metzger said. “He said it shook the whole house to the point that he couldn’t even open some of the doors.”
Metzger said there were no injuries in that fire or any of the other structure fires the department responded to that night.
There were other homes struck by lightning on Remington Park Drive, Beacon Street and Crescent Drive in Bridlewood. Metzger said the Lantana Apartments on Long Prairie Road also suffered electrical system damage, which he believes is a result of lightning. There were no injuries reported in those incidents either.
Flower Mound firefighters also assisted in other cities as well, including a three-alarm apartment fire in Grapevine on Tuesday. Flower Mound assisted in two storm-related fires in Argyle on Tuesday as well. Flower Mound also helped Trophy Club in battling a structure fire and assisted Lewisville in a major accident.
“Whenever we get these storms, we use mutual aid as a regional response to help out each other,” Metzger said. “We were all assisting each other during the last three nights. In these types of situations, we don’t think about boundaries.”
